What are the factors that make a blog successful?
As a blogger, it helps to have an understanding of what successful high-income bloggers consider to be the most important factors that make a blog successful. What is it that makes a blog successful?
Is it a catchy-title or heading? or is it SEO?
This is a question that GrowthBadger tried to answer when they interviewed 1117 bloggers to find out what worked for them. Although this survey was carried out in 2020, it still holds relevance going into 2021.
This is what they found. Surprisingly the importance placed on the various factors seemed to differ for bloggers who earned upwards of $ 50000 per year compared to those who earned less.
High-income bloggers consider good quality content, eye-catching headlines, and SEO as the top three factors determining the success of a blog with ratings of 8.8, 8.5, and 7.6 respectively.
This is what bloggers who earned less than $50000 per year consider as the factors that made a blog successful.
Quality content was high on the priority list of both high-income bloggers as well as for those who earned less.
Interestingly, bloggers with lesser income placed less importance on eye-catching headlines (6.7 compared to high-income bloggers who weighed it at 8.5/10) as well as SEO for which the lesser earning bloggers gave just 4.8 points compared to the high-income bloggers who considered it more important at 7.6.
It is also interesting to note the type of articles or posts that these two categories of bloggers have published in the last 12 months.
What type of content makes a blog successful?
For the high-income bloggers list articles (listicles), how-to guides, and case studies were considered as the type of content that most contributed to the success of a blog.
Whereas low income bloggers considered list articles, opinion pieces, and product reviews as most important. Also worth mentioning, that while 35% of high income bloggers produced ‘case studies’, only 6% of the low income bloggers did.
As a professional blogger, it is important to keep an eye on the statistics and what they reveal. How many blogs are out there? What are the trends that you should be aware of? What are the successful bloggers doing that the others aren’t?

1. There are 1.7 billion websites and 600 million blogs worldwide.
2. There are 2.5 billion blog posts published every year, i.e. 6,912,000 blog posts every day or 4800 every minute.

Those are huge numbers! which means that blogging is alive and thriving, which is why so many are investing their time into publishing such an amazing number of blog posts. It also means that the competition is intense and all the more reason to stay on top of your game to succeed.
4. There are 4.66 billion active internet users worldwide.
5. An incredible 77% of internet users read blogs regularly.
6. The average internet user spends almost 7 hours online daily.
4.66 billion active internet users! That’s a huge base! Of these 77% read blogs regularly! The number of active internet users is growing at an annualized rate of 7%, which means 875,000 new users are being added every day!
These figures show that with such a huge captive audience of 3.6 billion regular blog readers, this is a perfect time to start your own blog.
7. In the United States, internet users spend 3x more time reading blogs than reading emails.
This is an encouraging fact given that there are more than 312 million active internet users in the United States alone (source: Statista) and the fact that they spend 3x more time reading blogs than emails means that blogs are a powerful medium to reach your target audience or customers. This is not to suggest that email marketing is any less effective. Quite contrary, email marketing is something that you must target because it is proven to be very effective. If you haven’t started creating your email list, then you must start building one immediately. The above statistic simply proves that a blog is an extremely potent medium to get your message across.
8. An astounding 38.9% of all websites worldwide are powered by WordPress.
WordPress is an amazing, easy to use CMS (Content Management System) and allows you to create amazing websites. It is no surprise that most of the blogs are written in English as it has the widest reach since it is spoken and understood in almost every part of the world.
11. The average length of a blog post is 1269 words.
12. Bloggers who publish blog posts with more than 3000 words are 54% more likely to be successful.
It is easy to see the correlation between word count and blog success. Google prefers content that is well-researched, long-form, and in-depth because it enhances user experience. Since the user gets all his queries answered in a single post and doesn’t have to visit many different pages to get a solution.

The optimal word count for a successful blog post is between 2250 and 2500 words.
13. On average it takes about 3 hours and 58 minutes to write a blog post.
14. Bloggers, who spend 6+ hours on each blog post are 31% more likely to achieve strong results.
As the word count goes up, so does the time taken to write a blog post. The average time taken to write a blog post has gone up from 2 hours 24 minutes in 2014 to almost 4 hours now. However, it has been shown that bloggers who spend more than 6 hours on each blog post are likely to see more success. Obviously, their word count would also be higher.
Blog posts with a higher word count (greater than 3000 words) are more likely to be shared on social media and generate more links.
15. Most bloggers publish content on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis.
16. Bloggers who publish at regular intervals are more successful than those who publish irregularly.
Research shows that the frequency of publishing influences how successful a blog will be. In fact, publishing daily seems to get the best results. 68% of bloggers who publish on a daily basis reported strong results. That may not always be possible unless you are a news and current affairs blog or you happen to have considerable resources and staff or can afford to outsource article and blog post writing. Keep in mind that the articles and blog posts need to be long-form, exhaustive, and well researched with more than 2500 words.
The research also suggests that publishing regularly produces good results. So whether it’s a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly publishing frequency that works for you, remember to stick to it.
17. The key-phrase ‘How to start a blog‘ is searched 121,000 times a month (i.e. 4000 times every day).
Now that is a lot of interest in learning how to start a blog. Why? you wonder. With already 600 million blogs worldwide, does it make any sense to have one more? Is it the right time to start a blog? Well, the first movers had the advantage of lesser competition and it was easier to rank in search results. First movers always have an advantage in any industry, but that should not discourage you or anyone from starting a blog. While it is true that there are 600 million blogs worldwide, the question is how many of them are worth reading?
The best posting frequency to get great results seems to be 3 times per week. However, reports show that 66% of bloggers post just about a few times per month.
While the optimal word count for a successful blog post is between 2250 – 2500 words, only 8% of bloggers publish blog posts with more than 2000 words (OrbitMedia, 2018). That’s right – just 8%.
So there is room for improvement and a place for new bloggers who are willing to do whatever it takes to succeed and be among the best.
There is still a strong case to be made for starting your own blog in 2021 for anyone with confidence in their abilities, willing to work hard, and willing to learn.
18. Out of the total number of active internet users worldwide, 91% (i.e. 4.28 billion) are active mobile internet users.

While most people use voice assistants to make phone calls (dial a particular number or person) or to select and listen to music, their use to find directions or even general search is gaining popularity.
This has implications for SEO. When people search using voice they are more likely to use natural language than if they were typing text into a search box.
Because of the conversational nature of voice search, the keywords are likely to be longer so if you are looking to optimize your site for voice, you will have to target long-tail keywords.
Your writing style will have to be easy and conversational. Most of the results thrown up in voice searches are precise, to the point, simple, and written in an easy to understand language.
